A Guide to Maternity Milk Bath
There's something ethereal and magical about milk baths that makes them so perfect for maternity photography. It is a special way to capture your growing bump and celebrate your pregnancy.
The first thing would be to find a location with a bathtub for your session, preferably with lots of natural daylight. The bathtub should preferably be free-standing so that the photographer has the freedom of space and would be able to capture different angles. Most of our past clients have booked hotels for these sessions and the two most popular hotels were Hotel Nuve Heritage and W Hotel, Sentosa. You can also take this chance to have a relaxing staycation before your baby arrives.
Hotel Nuve Heritage has a suite with a bathtub that is located outdoors. The session usually starts with portraits around the hotel room and ends off with the milk bath.
W Hotel’s Marvelous Suite has a huge bathroom with a freestanding bathtub. There is also a balcony that is great for photographs.
There are a few options when it comes to choosing the milk.
Fresh Milk - This would be the most expensive choice. However, if you are looking to benefit from the skin-nourishing properties of milk, this could be one of your options.
Powdered Milk Powder - Most of our clients use this. You can easily buy bags of powdered milk powder from supermarkets.
Powdered Creamer - This was what Zoe Raymond used for her photography session with us. This is probably the cheapest option.
To prepare the milk bath:
Step 1: Fill the bathtub with warm water.
Step 2: Add in the milk powder or creamer and gently mix with your hands.
(Remember to add in the milk powder only after filling the bathtub as doing it the other way round will create bubbles.)
Step 3: Add in some of the flowers and leaves. Remember to get real flowers as synthetic flowers tend to sink.
Step 4: Get in the tub and the photographer will help you to style the tub with the remainder of the flowers and leaves.
These sessions are often done during the third trimester, between the 32nd and 36th week, where the belly is round and cute! Outfit choices are usually sheer or lace white robes but we are definitely open to more ideas if you prefer something different to suit your style. Do share your dreams with us and we will craft some breathtaking photographs for you.
